A note on canine leptospirosis from Dr. Fierman:
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that affects dogs, other animals, and humans. It can be spread through the urine of infected animals such as rats and is transmissible to people.
Dogs usually show signs of illness one to two weeks after exposure and symptoms may include fever, shivering, lack of appetite, and vomiting. This can be a severe illness if left untreated. We provide vaccinations against the most common strains of leptospirosis.
In addition to being vaccinated, you can help decrease exposure by keeping your dogs from drinking or walking through puddles of water on the street. Avoid walking or stopping around areas where rats and other wild animals may frequent such as under bushes in the park, and around garbage bags and bins. Do not let your dogs come into contact with wild animals and always wash your hands when cleaning up after your dogs.
